The Story behind the Photos:
This
album features Ten House memoirs and mementoes - the door from Engine
10, the banner from Ladder 10, the flags that were flying over the Ten
House and on Ladder 10 on September 11, 2001, and the Liberty Street
sign recovered in the debris. Several photos show the ruble and
damage to and around the Ten House following the attacks of September
11, 2001. A couple of photos taken by NOAA show the entire Ground Zero
area and the Ten House.
Pictures,
provided by friends from around the world, are included that were
taken before 9-11 and show the previous rigs and surrounding area.
This includes a great black and white photo by Pete Burke showing the
reflection of the previous Engine 10 from an overhead walkway of the
World Trade Center.
The
album concludes with a few photos of 9-11 Anniversary activities and
memorials contributed by website visitors. Thanks to everyone
that have provided photos from the past.
And
thanks
to PELCO of Clovis, California for providing the photos of the Ladder 10
flag on
display in PELCO's California Memorial Museum. For additional
information read the PELCO Memorial Museum
Story (Pelco © 2002).
Several
photos (noted in the captions) in this album were published in the Appleton (Wisconsin)
Post Crescent on the one year anniversary of 9-11. Ed Culhane,
Post-Crescent staff writer, and Mike De Sisti, Post-Crescent
photographer were guests of FDNY Ladder 10 at their temporary quarters
at Engine 4 - Ladder 15, a few block from the damaged Ten House.
These pictures were one of the inspirations for the website and a powerful
chronicle of life for Ladder 10 members from the time of the first
attack on 9-11 through the first year.
The
pictures document and tell the story of the new Ten Truck which was
built by the Seagrave factory in Clintonville, Wisconsin. Ladder
10 is a rear-mount aerial fire truck designed by Seagrave Fire
Apparatus to FDNY specifications. It cost about $550,000. It has two
rear down-and-out stabilizers, an 8kw hydraulic generator to provide
A/C power to lights or tools, a 370 horsepower Detroit Series 60
engine and a cab and body of corrosion-resistant steel. It's equipped
with FDNY recessed door handles. Length: 448 inches; Height: 130
inches; Width: 94; inches; Weight: (without firefighter gear) 60,000
pounds; Ladder length: 100 feet; Tip load: (safe weight at ladder end)
250 pounds.
